The new PCS interface

Hi guys,

I just came to check on some topics in PCS, surprised to see the forum revamped !

It is going to take me sone getting used to. At this point, i must say i dun really like this new interface.

1. It takes quite long to load.
2. Doesnt display threads at a glance as well as the old forum.
3. Not really smart phone friendly.

What are ur views ?

Hello my friends !

The PCS forum was a radical change!

Very different from the previous. I do not know good or bad comments about the new interface of the forum yet.

I found very cool the photo of CSCW in the page header.

The CSCW deserves that reputation indeed.

Another cool fact I checked was that when you login on the site, you can visualize the recent posts (recent topics) in full on the main page.

Actually I agree with ME, because it is more time consuming to load the page, the page server may be somewhat slow.

Anyway, I found the new site very cool and with more additions than the previous.

Congratulations PAUL for the beautiful work!

For Number 2, take a look here:

http://forum.pocketcalculatorshow.com/home

There are some widgets on that page that can be added to the forum page which display the latest new topics and the latest new comments.  I intentionally left them off of the main landing page to keep it simple.

For Number 1, once the data caches and DNS updates complete the speed should improve.

For Number 3, do you really find the mobile interface bad?  It's designed specifically for mobile devices like iPhone...very easy to manipulate with a small screen using finger taps.  No pinching and zooming.

Where are you looking?  I did a member search for "T:meline" and found you.

Speaking of search, that was a pain point in the old forum...search did not work very well.  It is much improved here.

Yes, you can find me under the "Search" tab but not where all the names are given under the "Members" tab next to "Search" tab at the top of the page.  It could possibly be that I'm just not used to this new format.  How does one log-off this forum? I see no tab for that. Again, it's possible I'm just not looking in the right place.

Hi all,

The difference between the new and the old forum is very much in the layout. In the old forum, it is very easy to see:

  1. Under each group, what is the latest thread. (Hence we can spot new threads easily)
  2. In each thread, who is the latest person who has replied to the thread.

(Very useful feature here because, if you are the thread starter and you have

replied/added on to the thread, you need not click to see the thread to see if there

is any additional entries, if your nick is still the last nick attached in that thread)

  3. I actually do not mind zooming in on a thread to read it even with my iphone. Touch

technology of the iphone is very smooth and zooming isnt difficult.

  4. The right side menus takes up almost 1/4 of the screen and when the post is

submitted, all the alignment and formatting is screwed up. Making the thread hard

to read. I only realised this when i submit this reply. (What you typed is not what

      you see after posting)

For points 1. and 2. , it is evident in the screenshot provided above. Apart from the thread CATEGORIES, all information about latest thread and thread replies are hidden !.

The new forum seem to move in the direction of "Tweet", "FB" and "app" style.

I think some old formats are worth keeping. Why so trendy ? After all, this is a forum that discuss vintage watches. It should have some "vintage" look and appearance in the interface.

One good point though.

I do like the CSCW being the icon of the forum though. It truly deserve its as a pocketcalculator and a watch. Previously, it wasn't even listed as one of the watches in the watch list. The CRCW was, but the CSCW wasn't.

It could possibly be that I'm just not used to this new format.

The Member tab lists every member, 50 members per page.  You're on page 58:

http://forum.pocketcalculatorshow.com/members?page=58

Log off?  Now why would you want to do that?

In the upper right corner of the screen, you'll see a little gear next to your avatar.  You hover your mouse over it and you can either change your profile or log out.

For the second item on the PC interface, when you click on a topic from the home page, you will be directed to the very last message in the thread.  In the example below, I'm hovering over the link "Casio Marlin W-36 (248)" under What Watch Are You Wearing?.  You can see at the bottom the URL takes you to the last reply in the thread.

Let me know if that's not working for you.

I'll try the mobile interface later today.

the mobile platform is driving me nuts ! it's a real pain in the arse.
every time i have to reset the layout to standard view, the  I have to scroll down to the last post.
on the forum content you need to look in detail at each heading to see when the last post was made

really what was wrong with the way the forum used to be?

I'll share how I use the site when I'm on my phone.  I use the mobile version over the standard view because I prefer not to pinch/zoom.

I have a shortcut to http://forum.pocketcalculatorshow.com/home which takes you to the activity page instead of the traditional forum page.

From there, I scroll down to "Activity" and then click that.  The page that displays shows all recent activity: new topics, recent replies to existing threads, new member joins, etc. I understand your point about having to scroll down to see the latest reply.  I'll see if there's a fix for that.

Also, have you set up your notification options to receive all dialogue/forum updates via email: http://forum.pocketcalculatorshow.com/notifications ?  The email content will show the new content and not entire threads.

It may take a bit of getting used to but it is still reasonably clear and uncluttered compared to many forums. What I dont like is that it now insists on me entering a birthday. The same information that banks and other institutions use as part of my validation process, this should not be public information.

Of course I can just enter a fake one but why should I, it only means I have to thank everybody for wishing me a happy 112th birthday on january the 1st

Many places do this I know, the simplicity of the signup and the minimal data needed to sign up was one of this forums positives (one of many I stress).
